Options on 29 of the most-traded US stocks and funds can be bought and sold before the opening bell from week starting Monday, October 19. On Cboe's options exchange, options on Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Palantir, along with the SPY and QQQ funds, now trade from 7:30 a.m. to 9:25 a.m. Eastern, ahead of the regular 9:30 a.m. open. Until now no US exchange allowed pre-market trading in options on individual stocks or exchange-traded funds, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The 24 single stocks on the list also get a session after the close, from 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Options on the five funds, SPY, QQQ, IWM, GLD and XLF, already traded until 4:15 p.m. as part of regular hours, so for them the new access is the morning session. Cboe says options on the 29 names made up about 53% of average daily US-listed options volume in 2026 through September.

NYSE American Options has scheduled the same 29 symbols for the same early and late sessions, starting the same day, according to its [exchange fact sheet](https://www.ice.com/publicdocs/nyse/notifications/trader-update/110000958754/NYSE_American_Options__Extended_Trading_Hours_Fact_Sheet.pdf).

Rob Hocking, Cboe's global head of derivatives, says Cboe has seen demand for its index options outside regular hours, "particularly leading up to the U.S. market open when economic data and corporate announcements are commonly released." He says the shift to trading around the clock five days a week is accelerating across asset classes. Tiger Brokers Singapore, one of the brokers backing the launch, says the US pre-market falls in the Singapore evening, when much of the news that moves US stocks comes out.

## The SEC Approved the Sessions So Investors Can Hedge Stock Positions Outside Regular Hours

The SEC approved Cboe's rule on May 28. In its [approval order](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/06/02/2026-10951/self-regulatory-organizations-cboe-exchange-inc-order-approving-a-proposed-rule-change-as-modified), the agency noted that stocks already trade on national exchanges as early as 4:00 a.m. and as late as 8:00 p.m., while investors had no way to trade options on an exchange in those hours, including "to hedge equity positions and mitigate downside risk in those positions." The SEC called the rule "novel" and wrote that Cboe chose "significantly shorter timeframes" than the stock market's extended hours because of "the lack of industry experience with extended trading sessions for equity options."

## Fidelity, Robinhood and Five Other Brokers Offer or Plan to Offer the Sessions

Cboe names Fidelity Investments, Interactive Brokers, Robinhood, Moomoo US, TradeStation, Tradier and Tiger Brokers Singapore as offering or planning to offer access. Moomoo and TradeStation say their clients can use the sessions from launch day; Cboe's announcement gives no start dates for the others.

Before a customer trades in the early or late session, the broker has to give them a risk disclosure under Cboe's rules, covering what it means to trade an option when the underlying stock may have no updated price or no regular trading. Brokers mark each order for the sessions it may trade in, and an order marked for regular hours only stays out of the new sessions.

An extended-hours order on a name that is not on the list is not rejected; Cboe says the extended-hours instruction "will simply be ignored and the order will rest until the RTH open at 9:30 a.m. ET."

## Market Orders Are Not Allowed in the Early and Late Sessions

Investors have to set a limit price on every order in the new sessions, and trading is electronic only.

FINRA, the brokerage industry's regulator, warns that [extended-hours trading in stocks](https://www.finra.org/investors/insights/extended-hours-trading) is less liquid, with fewer buyers and sellers, so an order "may be executed partially or not at all." FINRA also says prices are often more volatile outside regular hours, partly because some investors react quickly to earnings and other news released then.

## Expiring Options Still Settle on 4:00 p.m. Prices

On expiration day, expiring single-stock options trade until 4:15 p.m. in the late session, but the Options Clearing Corporation still sets closing prices on the 4:00 p.m. quotes and decides whether an option is in or out of the money from the underlying stock's 4:00 p.m. closing price. If a company releases news during the late session and its stock is halted, Cboe says trading in its options should halt too.

Cboe plans to review the eligible list twice a year. Its rule lets it designate up to 100 option classes that meet thresholds for options volume, share volume and company size.

Cboe lists the eligible options and session rules on [its website](https://www.cboe.com/document/tech-spec/document/technical-specifications/equity-options-extended-trading-hours-faq/).

## FAQ

**Q: Can you trade options after hours?**
Options on the 29 stocks and funds now trade until 4:15 p.m. Eastern, with no evening session on Cboe or NYSE American. Several of Cboe's own index options trade longer: Cboe runs a late session for them from 4:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and a Global Trading Hours session from 8:15 p.m. to 9:25 a.m. the next morning, and those index options are the only ones on Cboe that trade overnight.

**Q: Can you trade options after hours on Robinhood?**
Cboe lists Robinhood among the brokers offering or planning to offer the new sessions, but neither Cboe nor Robinhood has given a start date, so check the app or ask Robinhood. Of the seven brokers Cboe named, only Moomoo and TradeStation said they would offer access at launch.

**Q: Can you buy options when the market is closed?**
You can place an order, but it only trades during a session. Cboe starts accepting orders for the morning session at 7:15 a.m. Eastern, 15 minutes before trading begins.
