One in four UK businesses suffered a cyber incident originating in their supply chain over the past year, according to new research published this week. The figure sits alongside a finding that should alarm boardrooms more than the statistic itself: 48 per cent of organisations continued working with suppliers despite having identified resilience or security concerns with them.

The data comes from Databarracks's Data Health Check 2026, an annual survey of 500 IT decision-makers. The results describe a sector that is largely aware of the risk, regularly assesses for it, and then proceeds anyway. Nearly nine in ten organisations (89 per cent) evaluate supplier resilience at onboarding, and 61 per cent conduct assessments on an annual, quarterly, or continuous basis. The process is in place, yet the outcomes are not improving.

The consequences of knowingly accepting that risk are measurable. Among organisations that continued working with suppliers despite known concerns, 43 per cent experienced a supplier-originated cyber incident in the last year. Among those that did not knowingly carry that risk, the figure was 10 per cent. That is a fourfold difference attributable, at least in part, to a deliberate choice.
